The stock market in Shanghai is so hot that it’s keeping people from vacations.
At least that’s what a news report in the Chinese-language Southern Metropolitan Newspaper says. May 1-7 was a nationwide holiday period for Chinese.
China’s stock market is up more than 40 percent since the beginning of the year. And it seems Shanghai area residents weren’t about to leave for long trips and miss out on sudden market moves. The newspaper said 4.1 million people left for overseas trips during the holiday period from Shanghai’s Pudong Airport, an increase of only 1,000 or so people from last year.
“This is because of the fever of the stock market,” the newspaper said. “Since stock prices have been going up, many people invested their money into the market and cancelled their travel plans.”
Travel agencies in Shanghai ask travelers to place a huge deposit for overseas travel several weeks before taking trips. Apparently since the market rose so rapidly in April, many people didn’t want to tie up their money and leave it away from the action.
