The next Republican presidential debate is likely to exclude one or more candidates, possibily including Reps. Duncan Hunter of California, Ron Paul of Texas and Tom Tancredo of Colorado.
The sponsors of the Dec. 4 debate in Iowa - Fox News and the state Republican Party - say today that the only candidates allowed will be those who register at least 5 percent in an average of national polls, or an average of 5 percent in Iowa polls conducted by the American Research Group and the Des Moines Register.
Neither Hunter nor Tancredo has registered 5 percent in either national or Iowa polls.
Paul did register 5 percent support in one recent national poll for CNN, but his national average is below 5 percent. And he's below 5 percent in Iowa.
Paul could still make it. He just raised more than $4 million in one day _ enough to buy some ads and boost his support.
But Hunter and Tancredo likely are out.
The same thing happened last week on the Democratic side, when their debate excluded former Alaska Sen. Mikle Gravel.
