Hogs in the Holy Land
One day last year, a friend who was visiting bet me a bottle of wine that she could find a ham-and-cheese sandwich in Jerusalem within 10 minutes of being there.
She lost.
You can find ham-and-cheese in Israel, but not easily. And not very easily in Jerusalem.
For religious Jews and Muslims, eating pork is taboo. And, for religious Jews, eating meat and dairy together is also a big no-no.
Hog farmers of Israel even have to raise their pigs on elevated platforms so that their dirty hooves don't contaminate the holy land of Israel.
But there is another, more coveted kind of hog: The American Harley Davidson.
With the help of U.S. financial aid, Israel's military is buying nearly two dozen Harley Davidsons for its fleet.
Israel began adding Harleys to its fleet a few years ago.
One of those riding the massive motorcycles around Israel is Chani Yosef (pictured above, photo courtesy of the IDF), a 20-year-old sergeant who was the only woman among 15 cadets in her Military Police course.
Yosef was recently profiled by the Israeli military in this piece titled: "A girl and her Harley," which was probably an unintentional reference to the racy 1968 film "The Girl On A Motorcycle" starring Marianne Faithful...
