This is one of those stories that deserves more attention than it will get.
It's a shame that Peru is not doing a better job of distributing the benefits of its recent economic boom. Leaving the poor highlanders behind can only mean trouble for President Alan Garcia and his successor.
We all understand Peru's President is not doing the best job ever. Peruvians who voted for Garcia only did so because they didn't want Ollanta to win.
The protests in Peru are claiming different things that do not have to do necessarily with the fact of being left behind in the economy development of the country.
Some regions ask to stop the mining inversion, but they demand more money for their region from the mining activities. Some of the reasons why they are protesting do not imply a proposal to implement at a nationwide level.
The way the Peruvian government expects to develop its economy is not the best, but the protest do not actually help to actually change the government's perspective because they demand so many different things with (some of them) no implementation plan at all that just makes the situation even worst.

I agree with the comments above. Garcia was not the best of the candidates, but the "bolivarian" option of Ollanta was worst. On the other side, those people who protest want more money and jobs but are against the private investments and do not pay taxes. The NGOs (from developed countries, we know all of them) do not help at all and it seems that are more interested in the political games than in really helping people. Ah, of course, those NGOs pay very good salaries, better than many physicians paychecks and work very closely with some obscure catholic priests. Even some of those NGOs are more more concerned about the human rights of terrorists than in the life of our police and army forces men who were killed last month during some protests and then try to disinform the world opinion. Very cynical!!! The bright side is that most of the peruvians are hard working people who really want to work in peace in a democratic and free society. And regarding to the access to medical care, unfortunately we do not live in a european country where the geography is plain easing the communications by car or train and where people really understand the medical directions. Give me a break!!!
