Monday morning after a long weekend -- more Obama

10:45 a.m., Eastern, Obama will announce his national security team. You should already know the names by now, we've been writing about them for weeks. What will be the next installment in the serial?

WEEKEND READING A Roman Catholic priest in Modesto, Calif., produced quite a stir when he wrote a pastoral letter to his parishioners suggesting they should confess before they next take communion if they voted for Obama. Read the story. He tried to make it better yesterday by offering this explanation: He only meant they needed to confess if they were informed voters, that is, knew Obama's position on abortion rights. Fr. Illo wasn't the first priest to write his parishioners with a warning about their eternal souls: a priest in South Carolina did the same after the election. No retraction there. Why the difference? Maybe because Fr. Illo made his call for confession in a state Obama won.

GEN. BARRY MCCAFFREY was the subject of another installment by The New York Times's David Barstow examining the business dealings of the ex military officers who've come to dominate television news coverage of our wars as network news consultants. McCaffrey, it turns out, had a lucrative deal to push the sale of refurbished military equipment to Iraq -- and, surprise, his positions on TV and before Congress fit in nicely with that contract. But what's really galling is NBC's lack of concern. Barstow quotes the president of NBC News, Steve Capus, as saying McCaffrey would never let his business dealings color his commentary. But why does the network even place itself in a position to wonder? Isn't McCaffrey, still an influence at the Pentagon, one of those people a news organization should be covering?

From today's Biloxi Sun-Herald: FEMA trailers now costing $28 million annually to store. From Sunday's Miami Herald: With economy souring, illegal immigrants going home. From Saturday's Idaho Statesman, another example of the Bush rush to put his scent on environmental policy: Wolf protections could end before Bush leaves office.

PALIN WATCH In Georgia today, campaigning for Saxby Chambliss in tomorrow's runoff (read David Lightman and Matt Barnwell on the race). Tuesday, she's in Philly with the president-elect. Or at least at the same gathering.
